Track monarchs without disturbing them
The best observation leaves the monarch and its habitat as you found them. Most useful records can be made from a respectful distance.

Watch before approaching
Pause at the edge of the habitat and notice flight paths, feeding behavior and resting places. Move slowly and avoid blocking a butterfly's route to flowers or shelter.
Photograph with care
Use zoom rather than handling a monarch for a closer picture. Avoid touching wings, opening a chrysalis or moving eggs and caterpillars for a staged image.
If a tag is visible, photograph it from a safe distance and record only characters you can read. Do not guess a partial code.
Protect sensitive places
Stay on established paths where required, follow site rules and avoid sharing precise locations for vulnerable roosts when doing so could increase disturbance.
Monarch Tracker stores your observations here and does not submit them to outside programs automatically. Choose a recognized program separately if you want to contribute data.
